This year’s winners didn’t take Gervais’ advice. Regina King, for instance, spent some time lecturing the public about Derek Chauvin.
The ratings for this year’s Oscars have dropped massively. The ratings for 2021 fell more than 50 percent from the year before.
In 2021, the Oscars received 8.9/19. In 2020 it got 18.1/33 and in 2019 it received a much higher 21.6/36.
According to the New York Times, “analysis indicated that ‘vast swaths’ of people turned off their televisions when celebrities started to opine on politics.”
Of course, the poor viewership may also have something to do with the pandemic.
Ricky Gervais, then, may have been less facetious than he thought when he told actors that “if you win, accept your little award, thank your agent and your god, and f*** off.”
Despite this, this year’s winners didn’t take Gervais’ advice. Regina King, for instance, spent some time lecturing the public about Derek Chauvin.
The Oscars’ gave out a record number of awards to minorities after the #OscarsSoWhite Twitter campaign.
