Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said that with the introduction of the COVID-19 vaccine, that it is “time to put shutdowns behind us.”
The governor announced that 200,000 doses of the vaccine will be distributed across the longhorn state in the coming weeks, as Texas continues to deal with new a spike in cases and deaths, reports KHOU.
14,805 cases and 252 new deaths were announced on Wednesday, with more than 9,400 having been hospitalized.
Lockdowns in Texas have remained minimal, though, with Abbott saying that no businesses would be forced to close.
“We will not have any more shutdowns in Texas… People’s lives have been crushed.”
Abbott said he will be receiving the vaccine “at the appropriate time.”
Healthcare workers and seniors will receive the vaccine first. Abbott said that a million Texans could be vaccinated by the end of the month.
“Every adult in Texas has the responsibility to follow the safe practices,” Abbott said. “If they do that, we can contain COVID-19.”
