The colorful language Yankees manager Aaron Boone unleashed on rookie umpire Brennan Miller during Thursday’s game against Tampa Bay has resulted in a one-game suspension.
The punishment is Boone’s third suspension of the season and the sixth of his managerial career. When arguing with Miller over balls and strikes, Boone made no effort to hide his frustration or bite his tongue. He was ejected in the second inning.
A hot microphone nearby picked up everything the manager said during his rant, and a fan shared a video of the outburst, with subtitles, to Twitter.
(Warning: NSFW language can be heard in the clip.)
“My guys are (expletive) savages in that (expletive) box,” Boone yelled at Miller. “And you’re having a piece of (expletive) start to this game. I feel bad for you. But (expletive) get better. That guy is a good pitcher. But our guys are (expletive) savages in that box. Our guys are savages in that (expletive) box. Tighten it up right now, OK? Tighten this (expletive) box.”
Everything worked out well for New York, as the Yankees swept the doubleheader, 6-2 and 5-1.
The Yankees-Rays game was only Miller’s fifth MLB game working behind the plate. After the game, Boone chalked his explosion up to feeling “the heat of battle.”
The suspension should give him plenty of time to cool off.
