Bradley Cooper reveals he was embarrassed by Oscars best-director snub

“Crazy Rich Asians” and “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” are some of the most shocking snubs for the 2019 Oscar nominations.

USA TODAY

NEW YORK – Bradley Cooper revealed his real reaction to being snubbed in the best-director category for the 2019 Academy Awards.
“The first thing I felt was embarrassment, actually,” Cooper told Oprah Winfrey Tuesday about not being nominated for his directorial debut, “A Star Is Born.”
“They said congratulations on these other things, but they didn’t tell me the bad news,” Cooper said. “I felt embarrassed that I didn’t do my part.”
“I went, ‘Oh gosh, I didn’t do my job,’ ” he confessed at the taping for Winfrey’s “SuperSoul Conversations” TV special.

“A Star Is Born” received eight Oscar nominations, including best picture and best actor, actress and supporting actor for Cooper’s Jackson Maine, Lady Gaga’s breakout role as Ally and Sam Elliott as Jackson’s brother, Bobby.
“But the truth is, even if I got the nomination, that should not give me any sense of whether I did my job or not,” Cooper said. “The trick is to make something that you believe in and you work hard and then you have the project and you say, ‘OK.’ “
Cooper recalled feeling nervous before the movie’s premiere at the Venice Film Festival.
“I was sick, and I thought, ‘Oh yeah, I really do care what people are going to feel,’ ” Cooper said. “It was a very personal thing, this movie, and I really did show myself in a way that I thought ‘oh wow, this is vulnerable.’ And I said to myself, ‘If people don’t like it, please don’t let that stop inspiring you to make art.’ “
Winfrey’s “SuperSoul Conversations” airs Feb. 16 at 8 EST/PST on OWN.
